Turkey’s largest steel producer, the Erdemir Group, saw its total flat rolled steel exports reach 209,000 metric tons in the first quarter of 2017, up 9.5% year-on-year. Its exports to the European Union rose notably, by 15% on-year to 146,000 mt, bringing the EU’s share in Erdemir’s total flat product exports to 70% in Q1, the company said in a financial results presentation.

Erdemir's flat product exports to its second biggest destination, the MENA region, however slumped by 63% on-year to just 16,000 mt in January-March, while its exports of flat products to Asian countries, at 35,000 mt, were sharply up from the 4,000 mt exported in the same period of the previous year. The company also exported 3,000 mt of flat products to North America in Q1, it said.

As reported, in March 2016 the US put preliminary anti-dumping duties on imports of hot rolled coil from seven countries, including Turkey; the final duties were imposed in August.

The group, meanwhile, sold 1.5 million mt of flat rolled steel to its domestic market in Q1 2017, down 10% on-year. The pipe and profile sector remained Erdemir’s main domestic purchaser, buying 737,000 mt, approximately the same as in Q1 2016, while its sales to the automotive sector rose by 3.2% on-year, to 189,000 mt.

Erdemir’s total HRC sales fell to 1.29 million mt in January-March, down from 1.39 million mt sold in Q1 2016, while cold rolled coil sales also fell notably by 8.5% on-year to 459,000 mt, the company said.

Net profit at Erdemir Group totaled TRY 902 million ($248 million) in Q1, significantly up from TRY 163 million in the same period of the previous year, while its revenue rose 62.5% year-on-year to TRY 4.2 billion ($1.15 billion), as Platts reported Friday.
